John Henkelman BSB.

Born and raised in Florida, John is a scientist, eagle scout, and adventurer. As a Florida native grew up exploring his own backyard. From trips in the Everglades to exploring karst caves in Northern Florida, there isn't much he hasn't done. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Palm Beach Atlantic University, John continued his scientific career in the South Florida Biotech industry for the last decade.

In his spare time, he continued scientific pursuits with numerous citizen science projects. Through these projects, he better understood the true beauty of Florida's native plants and animals. He loves to share what he has learned during hikes he guides and public programs, which led to his induction to the Explorers Club in 2021.

While his love of Florida runs deep, John recently moved to New England to pursue a graduate degree in Outdoor and Adventure Education at the University of New Hampshire. He is excited to be able to tie together his love for science and adventure.

John has recently been drawn to the scientific understanding of microplastics and how they enter freshwater and marine systems. His scientific background will aid us in the experimental design and implementation of our novel project of measuring microplastic loads in a cross-section of South Florida, including the Everglades.
